My Journey to ICPD30 2024 in Benin: A Milestone for Somali Youth

Participating in the ICPD30 Global Dialogues in Benin marked a significant milestone in my journey as a youth advocate and professional. It was my first time traveling abroad and attending a global conference, and the experience was nothing short of transformative. As I boarded the plane to Benin, a wave of excitement and anticipation washed over me.
This was more than just a trip; it was an opportunity to represent Somali youth on a global stage and to contribute to discussions that could shape the future for young people around the world. My journey to the ICPD30 Global Dialogues was fueled by a passion to address the challenges facing my country and to bring our unique perspectives to the forefront of global conversations. The conference, hosted and funded by UNFPA, brought together youth leaders, policymakers, and advocates from various corners of the globe. I was honored to participate in several panel and roundtable discussions, where I spoke about critical issues such as youth participation in peacebuilding and mental health. These discussions were not only enlightening but also empowering, as they highlighted the shared challenges and aspirations of young people worldwide.
One of the most impactful aspects of the conference was the opportunity to engage with other youth leaders and advocates. I made friends from different countries, each bringing unique insights and experiences that enriched our conversations. These connections not only broadened my understanding of global youth issues but also fostered a sense of solidarity and collective purpose.
Throughout the conference, I took part in numerous roundtable discussions and panels, diving deep into topics that matter most to young people. The diversity of experiences and ideas enriched our conversations and reinforced the importance of inclusive and collaborative approaches to addressing global challenges. It was inspiring to see how young people from different backgrounds are driving change in their communities, and it motivated me to continue my efforts in Somalia with renewed vigor.
Returning to Somalia, I am filled with a sense of responsibility and determination. I plan to share my experiences and the knowledge I gained with other youths through workshops and community forums. My goal is to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders in my community, ensuring that the voices of Somali youth continue to be heard on the global stage.
I am immensely grateful to UNFPA for selecting me to represent my country at this pivotal event. The ICPD30 Global Dialogues in Benin was more than just a conference; it was a pivotal moment in my journey as a youth advocate. It reinforced my belief in the power of youth to drive meaningful change and highlighted the importance of global solidarity in addressing the challenges we face. I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to continuing my work with a renewed commitment to making a difference.
